This one is a technician's job
Most likely — this is the commonest cause of this exact set of symptoms, but not the only one.
The white crust is calcium scale. It masks the plate surface and output falls away steadily, often without the unit reporting anything. Cleaning it is possible at home but it involves concentrated acid — if you have not done it before, let us do it, and we will also look at why it is scaling this fast in the first place.
We stop here because the next step needs an instrument, or carries a risk not worth taking on. Handing this to a technician is the correct answer to these symptoms — not a cop-out.
What to do
- 1
If you do it yourself: pump off, control-box breaker off, and only then remove the cell.
- 2
Mix one part hydrochloric acid to ten parts water — acid into water, never water into acid. Goggles and gloves, and do it outdoors.
- 3
Soak for no more than ten minutes, or until the fizzing stops, then rinse thoroughly. Soaking longer eats the plate coating and permanently shortens the cell's life.
- 4
Once it is back in, bring pH down to 7.2–7.6 — otherwise the scale returns within weeks.
- 5
Then shock as normal: about 1 litre of 10% liquid chlorine per 10 m³, at dusk.
