TROUBLESHOOT

Green pool water

One question at a time — five to eight of them, two or three minutes — and then the most likely cause and exactly what to do about it. No test kit needed.

Question 6

Walk over to the skimmer. Where is the water sitting in its mouth?

The skimmer is the rectangular opening in the pool wall with a hinged flap inside it. The level should sit at about the middle of that opening. After heavy rain it is usually above the top of it, and that changes the whole fix — rain does not just add water, it dilutes the chlorine and the stabiliser holding it, and washes in dust, leaves and the phosphate from soil and fertiliser that algae feeds on.
