Green pool water

A cartridge is cleaned by hand, not by backwashing
Most likely — this is the commonest cause of this exact set of symptoms, but not the only one.
A cartridge collects sunscreen, body oils and dust until the pores close, sometimes without the pressure rising dramatically. In this climate it wants cleaning every 4–6 weeks, and replacing every one to two years.
What to do
- 1
Switch the pump off and kill its breaker before opening the filter housing, then open the air-relief valve on top and let the pressure out completely before you undo the lid.
- 2
Take the cartridge out and hose between every pleat, top to bottom. Never use a wire brush.
- 3
If the pleats are grey, flattened or split, replace it. No amount of washing brings one back.
- 4
Refit, run the pump continuously for 24 hours, and shock with about 1 litre of 10% liquid chlorine per 10 m³ at dusk.
