Green pool water

The filter is blocked — too little water is getting through
High confidence — the answers you gave point clearly at this one cause.
A gauge sitting 8–10 psi above its clean reading means far less water is passing through the filter. The pump still spins and still sounds normal, but the volume actually being filtered can be under half of what it should be — which is enough for algae to outgrow the filtration. This is a clear cause, and it is a job you can do yourself.
What to do
- 1
Switch the pump OFF before turning the multiport valve, every time. Turning it while the pump runs destroys the internal seal.
- 2
Set the valve to BACKWASH, switch on, and run until the water in the sight glass runs clear — usually 2 to 3 minutes.
- 3
Switch off, set the valve to RINSE, run 30–60 seconds, switch off, and return to FILTER. Rinse is the step most people skip, and skipping it is why the water goes cloudy right after a backwash.
- 4
Write the new reading beside the gauge. That is your pool's clean number. Backwash again when it climbs 8–10 psi above it.
- 5
Top the pool back up to the middle of the skimmer mouth. A backwash removes more water than people expect, and a pump that starts sucking air will damage itself.
- 6
Brush the walls and floor, then shock: about 1 litre of 10% liquid chlorine per 10 m³, or 150 g of 70% granular per 10 m³, added at dusk.
- 7
Run the pump continuously for 24 hours, then vacuum the dead algae out to WASTE. If the water is not clearing within 48 hours, call us.
